Mortgage Deed, 1836.

Mortgage deed, dated April 15, 1836, transferring 40 acres of land in Royal Oak (Oakland County, Mich.) from Orson Starr to Henry W. Laraway for $350. The deed was signed by Starr, witness John Hough and Nicholas W. Pullen, Justice of the Peace for Oakland County (Mich.). Two notes written on the back include: 1)"Received $200 July 25, 1836," and 2)"Mortgage paid/satisfied Sept. 13, 1837" with seal. Both notes were signed by Laraway. The deed was printed by A.G. Sparhawk, Printer, Pontiac, with additional information in handwriting.

No information is available on Laraway, Pullen, or Hough. Starr was born in New York (State) in 1803. He married Rhoda Gibbs (d. Sept. 8, 1863). They lived in Royal Oak Township (Mich.), where, like his father Vine Starr, Orson manufactured cow bells. They had four daughters and six sons, the eldest of which, Almon Starr, became a wealthy manufacturer of bricks and tiles. Orson died on April 23, 1873. John Hough and his probable wife, Elizabeth, were likely disowned by their Quaker Meeting, Falls Monthly Meeting. Hough was a well-to-do farmer who probably never returned to the Quaker fold. Henry was their probable son. From the description of Inventory of the goods and chattles [sic] of John Hough, late of Lower Makefield Township (Pa.) ... Henry Hough, administrator 1807.
